I try to stay away from skin care products with fragrance and alcohol, but since I use this only once a day and sparingly, I can easily combat any of their effects if they even have any.

What is acne and how does it develops? 
Acne is the most common skin disease and very common to teenagers. Nearly everyone experiences acne at some point in life. It may last for a few months or a few years. 

An acne blemish begins approximately 2-3 weeks before it appears on your skin’s surface. My Skin Care Tips

Alex actually covered most of the skin care tips that I would recommend, but here are a few that I would like to add her tips above.

1. Makeup and makeup tools can make or break your skin

Always make sure your makeup products are stored properly and sanitized. Keep in mind that other makeup products' shelf life are way shorter than others, so please make sure you toss 'em after the expiration dates. You must wash and sanitize your makeup brushes and sponges religiously to get ride of all the bacteria and build ups. 

2. Avoid touching your face

Here is one of the best tips that I can probably give you. I for one used to always touch my face, particularly my chin and jawline. So it wasn't a surprise when I get HUGE and UGLY zits on those areas. If you must touch your face, please do so after washing your hands first. 

3. Treat your skin, at least weekly

I love washing my face first thing in the morning. It helps in waking up my senses and I also love the feeling of having a freshly washed face. The only problem with this cheap thrill is that my skin has been acting up pretty badly for a while now, so I've been very picky with the cleansers I use. You guys know how much I love Proactiv, right? So it's really not a surprise when I was super excited to try this cleanser!

So what are my first impressions about this cleanser? (Yes, this is not a full review yet since I've only used it for a few days)

First of all, I appreciate the practicality of the packaging. It's easy to tote around and because of the cover, I won't have to worry about any spilling in my bag when I bring it anywhere.

The first time I used it, I was relieved that it was gentle enough for my already troubled skin. The scent is the same with the Proactiv refining mask; it's texture is also similar with the mask but this is more dilluted so it's easier to apply.

While it may seem counter intuitive, harsh scrubbing does not unclog your pores any better than gentle cleansing, and may actually worsen your acne. Cleansing and scrubbing only reduce surface oils and dean skin cells. Many people use harsh products, laden with alcohol and foamy surfactants (detergents) somehow wash the acne off their skin. However, these actions produce irritation and worsen acne. It is possible to gently unplug pores with fine polyethylene beads that gently relieve impacted pores without irritation. Proactiv Renewing Cleanser is formulated without the harsh detergents known as surfactants found in many other cleansers. Mucopolysaccharides - these are gel like substances surrounding the collagen and elastin in the dermis layer of the skin.
Polyethylene - these small round beads have no sharp edges that can tear and scratch the skin while they gently remove old, dead cells.
Anthemis Nobilis Flower Extract - this is a botanical extract known for its soothing properties.

All in all, I'm really loving this cleanser. Though it's a bit early to say it's very effective, at least it's not making my skin breakout more. It didn't left my skin dry unlike other anti-acne cleansers that I've tried. It also doesn't sting my skin at all. Personally, I think this would work well when used with the entire Proactiv skincare system.

OTHER WAYS TO TREAT ACNE

PROACTIV SOLUTION VS SOAP 

While it may seem counter-intuitive, harsh scrubbing does not unclog your pores any better than gentle cleansing, and may actually worsen your acne. Cleansing and scrubbing only reduce surface oils and dead skin cells. Many people use harsh products, laden with alcohol and foamy surfactants (detergents) somehow wash the acne off their skin. However, these actions often produce irritation and worsen acne. It is possible to gently unplug pores with fine polyethylene beads that gently relieve impacted pores without irritation. 

Proactiv Solution does not contain any surfactants that can harsh the skin. 

Proactiv® Renewing Cleanser is formulated without the harsh detergents, known as surfactants, found in many other cleansers. I personally use their Deep Cleansing Wash. Surfactants, which are responsible for a sudsy foam and lather, strip skin of its essential oils. As a result, the skin’s barrier becomes damaged and vulnerable to irritation and infection.

PROACTIV SOLUTION VS SALICYLIC ACID

Salicylic acid in a cleanser breaks through the plug but does not kill the P. acnes bacteria, the bacteria that cause acne breakouts.

Acne is caused by a variety of factors that take place below the surface of the skin. That’s why it’s best to gently wash with a medicated cleanser with proven ingredients, like benzoyl peroxide, or sulfur, that can penetrate the skin to help unclog pores, kill bacteria and/or reduce inflammation.

PROACTIV SOLUTION VS. ORAL DRUGS

When acne is severe, dermatologists sometimes prescribe oral drugs like isotretinoin or hormonal pills. There are studies that support that these methods are extremely effective for severe cases, but because of the nature of these drugs there are side effects that make it questionable if the benefits truly outweigh the cost. For example, there were reports in 2010 linking suicidal tendencies and psychotic behaviors among acne patients on isotretinoin. Hormonal pills, which are mainly indicated as a contraceptive sometimes causes water retention, weight gain, mood swings, and in the long run, even breast cancer.

What's the good news? Proactiv Solution does not have these side effects!

As a self-confessed shopaholic, I've encountered all types or at least most types of sales people. 

The annoyingly clingy who won't give you your space as a shopper, the one who will "hard sell" everything even when you already know what you want/need, the one who doesn't give a fudge because he/she is too tired or preoccupied with something else, the flirt who'll shower you with compliments and sometimes ask for your name and/or number and the perfect one; the one who'll answer all your questions with sincerity, wouldn't push you in buying anything and would make you want to come back because you trust him/her.

The latter one is very hard to come by. I always try to commend sales people like that because I think they're such gems that their employers should take good care of them.

Last January of this year, Proactiv launched the Proactiv Skin Care Advisor Program. What that means is that their Skin Care Advisors at selected Watson's counters and Proaciv kiosks should be able to handle queries about the products proficiently, accommodate customers even those who aren't necessarily buying anything, with the hopes of possibly go back because of the rapport they've built with the customer. That's a tough job to do especially when you're selling skincare products that are a bit expensive. 

I went to their TriNoma branch a few nights back. I just came off from work and decided to have a consultation around that time. Why? I notice that that's a critical time for people in the service industry. That's the time wherein most of them are already tired and exhausted. Some are even no longer accommodating during those hour. I think that's the perfect scenario to see how they'll take care of their customers. :)



I was able to consult with Ms. Jean Tamayo. I also intentionally wore a casual outfit because I notice I get special treatments whenever I'm in my usual corporate attire. (When people think you're a boss, they're extra nice to you. LOL) I casually passed by the counter, walking slowly. I approached the counter, and Ms. Jean greeted me with a smile. I asked a few questions, specifically about my acne scars. I tend to have cystic acne on my jawline, which always leave a nasty pigment.

Knowing Proactiv doesn't have an "acne scar treatment", I thought she'll pitch a product that I know wouldn't work. Surprisingly, she didn't. But she did mention that the toner in the complete kit would help in lightening the spots but that won't totally remove it. Honesty? Passed!

She also suggested their refining mask, for my cystic acne problems. She taught me how to use it in 2 ways: on my face for a few minutes or leave it overnight on the pimple itself. Proactive-ness? Passed!

I also asked her what she could recommend to my sister who gets body acne every now and then. She said my sister can use their deep cleansing wash. It can be used for both face and body. It will last a long time so it's definitely worth every Peso. Proficiency? Passed!

But what is the most important factor for me? Even though she can tell that I won't be buying right at that moment, she still took her time to explain everything to me. She didn't even "sell" anything to me! She just answered my questions and made suggestions on my problems. THAT'S A BIG DEAL. I really don't like the feeling of being "persuaded" or "enforced" to buy something. It seems a little too manipulative for me, so I really appreciate her just being a good listener and gave suggestions that could work. I like the feeling of being valued without having to buy anything. I think that's what the sales industry is doing wrong nowadays: most of them are only nice when they know or think the customer will shell out money.

So what is my verdict to Ms. Jean Tamayo?

5 out of 5!

I actually already know some of the stuff she discussed, especially about the products since I've reviewed them already, which is good because I know she didn't hype anything. She was very accommodating, sincere and made me feel like we're friends. She's someone you'd want to talk to because you'll know she just wants to help you out.
